Air Atomising

Atomising nozzles have a two-fluid process, typically air and water (other gases and liquids can be used to suit the application).

The level of atomisation can be altered by varying the atomising air and/or liquid pressure.

These spray nozzles are ideal where viscous liquids need to be sprayed.

Overview of air atomising principals. (For detailed information please contact ICS (Tel: +44 (0) 1244 371167 - Email: sales@icsindustrialservices.co.uk).
The XA basic assembly consists of - Spray set up: Body set up: Hardware set up

Spray Set-Ups
XA nozzles produce 8 types of spray patterns, depending upon which air & fluid caps are installed. The spray type & flow rate are determined by the unique combination of air cap & fluid cap.
Internal & External Set-Ups
The XA range gives the opportunity to chose either an internal or external mix.

Combined orifice Separate orifice Atomisation Air / liquid relationship Viscosity
Internal Mix Yes No Very fine Change in air flow will affect liquid flow Up to 200 CP
External Mix No Yes Fine Air flow & liquid flow act independently Over 200 CP
Syphon set up

Yes Yes Very Fine Siphon feed Up to 200 CP

Syphon set up This set up uses the compressed air feed to syphon liquid from a container without the use of a liquid pump.
This system provides the lowest flow rates—as low as 0.38lphr.

MATERIALS Bodies, Fluid Caps, Air Caps, Hardware Assemblies, Mount Hardware
The standard materials are nickel-plated brass and 303 st.st. Other materials & plastics are available.
Air Cylinders
The air cylinders used for hardware assemblies E & F have rods & cylinders made of stainless steel and end caps of anodized aluminium. All metal parts in conatc with the spray fluid are 316st.st.
Seals
Standard material is compressed fiber with neoprene binder. Installations needing FDA approval, SBR gaskets are available. O-ring standard material is Viton®

Non-automatic operation
Where manual control is satisfactory
Automatic operation
Critical operation, which require, non drip, and/or high speed spray shut off.

Non automatic Operation
Body set up
XA00 - Air & liquid feeds are situated opposite each other & perpendicular to the spray
XA03 - Air & liquid feeds are on one side & perpendicular to the spray.
XA05 - Air & liquid feeds are located in line (hardware assemblies cannot be used)
Hardware assembly set up
A. Plug - The minimum option. Closes the assembly access
B. Shut off - Turning the knurled knob will stop the flow of liquid to the nozzle. (not to be used to meter the liquid)
C. Clean out - Pressing the spring loaded plunger will force a small diameter rod through the liquid orifice, cleaning in the process. Useful for intermittent spraying of a liquid that may dry in the orifice when not in use.
D. Clean out/shut off - combines functions of B & C.

Automatic Operation
Body set up
XA01 - One inlet for air & one for liquid. The air inlet supplies both the atomisation and the cylinder movement. Not as crisp as the XA02. The XA01 body cannot be used with atomizing air pressure under 2 bar.
XA02 - Two inlets for air and one for liquid. One of the air inlets feeds the cylinder and the other supplies the atomising air. Ideal where the air cylinder operates at a different pressure to the atomising air, or where the atomizing air is below 2 bar.
Hardware assembly set up
E. Air operated shut off - removal of air pressure to the cylinder causes a spring loaded poppet valve actuator to shut off liquid flow
F. Air operated Clean-out/Shut off - Operation similar to E, but includes a clean out valve.

Solenoid valves, filters, regulators, strainers & mounting brackets are all available — contact ICS (Tel: +44 (0) 1244 371167 - Email: sales@icsindustrialservices.co.uk) for more information.
