Trouble Shooting

There are a multitude of reasons why you may not be getting the best out of your spray nozzles.

System design, viscosity, surface tension, temperature, pump malfunction and spray nozzle design and wear will all have an effect on the spray quality being achieved. Assuming the system design is correct, no variation in pump pressure is experienced and also no variation in spray product, (i.e. nothing else has changed), then the spray nozzle itself must be considered.

Changes in flow rate Possible cause Possible solution
Low flow rates Nozzle clogging

Wrong nozzle size

Install filters, consider self cleaning or changing to nozzles that have larger free passage
Check nozzle capacity and system design

Excessive flow rates Nozzle wear Change nozzle: consider harder wearing material
Undue orifice wear Wrong nozzle size

Wrong orifice material
Check nozzle capacity and system design
Consider harder wearing material

Changes in spray pattern Possible cause Possible solution
Streaking in spray pattern Nozzle clogging

Nozzle wear

Wrong nozzle design

Install filters, consider self cleaning or changing to nozzles that have larger free passage
Change nozzle: consider harder wearing material
Change nozzle: consider harder wearing material
Check nozzle capacity and system design

Increased droplet size Nozzle wear Change nozzle: consider harder wearing material
Orifice erosion & wear Wrong nozzle size

Wrong nozzle material

Check nozzle capacity and system design
Consider harder wearing materials

Uneven coating or cleaning Worn orifice:

Blocked orifice

Change nozzle: consider harder wearing material
Install filters, consider self cleaning or changing to nozzles that have larger free passage

Not enough coverage Wrong spray angle Check nozzle specification: replace nozzles

Changes in droplet size Possible cause Possible solution
Wrong size Change in flow rate, spray pattern See above

Corrosion Possible cause Possible solution
Nozzle wear Chemical attack Change nozzle material

The above causes and possible solutions are a general guide only. There are many other factors to be considered and one of our engineers can assist you in identifying the causes and advise you on a cost effective and energy saving way to improve your spraying operations.
